About Ph.D for Working Professionals

Ph.D for Working Professionals is a doctoral programme that has been specially curated by SGVU to provide opportunities to working professionals who are keenly interested in doing research and wish to receive a degree in the same field for further academic enhancement, career advancement and spreading research activities with industrial support, collaboration & promotion. This programme is designed to enhance research culture and encourages employed Scientists/ Engineers/ Technocrats/ Teachers/ Industry professionals or Working executives to improve their qualification and contribution towards society with the facility of research at their places along with the industrial collaboration.

We support seasoned professionals with corporate expertise, intellectual curiosity and a desire to conduct research to build a career in academia or advance their position to a strategic or consulting level. Working professionals can obtain advanced research skills through the programme to supplement their practical expertise. Over the course of three to four years, it enables professionals to gain experience in interdisciplinary research on a part-time basis. It enables them to present workable and long-lasting solutions facing enterprises.

  • Any M.Tech. / M. Pharm. / M.A. / M. Com. / M.Sc. / M.B.A. / M.A. or equivalent Post Graduation Degree in the relevant stream with a minimum aggregate of 55% and above from a recognized university AND minimum working experience of 2 years in relevant field. OR
  • Any B.Tech./ B.E. / B. Pharm. / B.Sc. (4 years) / BHMCT (Hotel Management and Catering Technology) or equivalent 4 years Bachelors degree in the relevant stream with a minimum aggregate of 7.5 GPA or 75% and above from a recognized university AND minimum working experience of 5 years in relevant field. OR
  • Any B.Sc. / BBA / B.Com. / B.A. or 3 years Bachelors degree in the relevant stream with a minimum aggregate of 7.5 GPA or 75% and above from a recognized university AND minimum working experience of 5 years in relevant field. However, such candidates must also earn 40 additional credits in one year before/with the course work.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks from specified eligibility shall be allowed for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layers)/Differently-abled categories, by the University.

Even if you do not have a Masters/PG degree, you will be able to apply for the PhD programme if you have

You will be required to fill an application form and upload all the relevant supporting documents. Your application form along with the supporting credentials will be reviewed by the admissions team and you will be intimated if you are eligible to enroll for the programme. You will also have to appear for an entrance test and attend a Personal Interview as a part of the selection process. Once intimated about selection into the programme, you will proceed to pay the programme fee after which you will be considered an active student of this programme. Your research area needs to necessarily fall under the Faculty of your Masters degree and upon successful completion, the PhD will be awarded under the same faculty only. You are free to combine your main subject with other subjects in different areas but your research proposal needs to be in the primary subject mentioned in the Masters degree. For eg. You will be considered ineligible to pursue a PhD in the Biotechnology if your Masters Degree is an MBA that falls under the Faculty of Management and not under the Faculty of Biotechnology.

Depending upon your final selection into the programme subsequent to the submission of your research proposal, entrance test and personal interview, you will be communicated about the session commencement dates.

Yes, we have associations with financial service providers. Should you require any assistance with financial loans, our Program Advisor will be happy to support you with the guidelines for the same. However, the decision to grant the loan will depend on the adequacy of documents submitted and will be at the sole discretion of the respective financing agency/bank. The loan itself will be based on a mutual agreement exclusively between you and the financing agency/bank and SGVU will have no role whatsoever in this financing arrangement between the two parties. 

  • Laptop or desktop with basic specifications. However, in order to optimize your learning experience, we recommend that you have the following,
  • Internet speed of 1 Mbps minimum (preferable wired connection).
  • Supporting OS – Window 7, Window 8, Widows 10, Safari & Mac OS.
  • Recommended Browser – Google Chrome and Firefox
  • Recommended Device – Laptop or Desktop (Avoid using Mobile or Ipad)
  • Functional web cam, microphone and speaker enabled on your laptop/desktop
  • Latest Adobe flash player should be installed in your system.
  • Any other technical requirements that may be needed at a later stage will be communicated towards the commencement of those courses. 

You are required to successfully complete the programme within a maximum of 6 years from the FIRST REGISTRATION to be eligible for award of the degree, failing which, the admission to this programme becomes void.

If you miss an examination, you can take the same in the next available semester as backlog courses as per the University’s examinations schedule.

If you miss an entire semester, then you can re-start the degree with the missed semester along with the next batch, subject to prior approval from SGVU. This will be treated as Readmission and you will be required to pay an additional readmission fee.

End semester exams will be held at the University campus and submission of semester progress report through seminar and presentation will be compulsory twice in a year. Assessment will also be done on the basis of Continuous Internal Evaluation. 

A student is required to successfully complete all the required coursework prescribed for this programme. Students must also publish research papers as per the specified guideline in addition to successfully submitting the thesis and clearing the viva. The details of each requirement will be shared upon enrolment and upon successful completion of the mandated requirements students will be awarded a Ph.D.

Upon successful completion of the programme, you will need to coordinate with SGVU and collect the final degree directly from SGVU, either in person or via post. 

SGVU follows the UGC policy in respect of ‘Admission Withdrawal & Fee Refund’ The SGVU Notifications viz. No. SGVU/REG/2014-15/1012, dated 23 Jan 2015, No. F.3(1)ACAD/SGVU/2018/9858, dated 29th Dec 2018, and the UGC Notification of Dec. 2016. No refund requests will be considered or processed once your academic session commences. Also, please note that in cases where you may be eligible for refund, only the programme fee will be refunded in accordance with UGC’s refund policy and Fee for Admission Form, Application Processing and Enrolment Fee is not refundable.

At the time of final thesis presentation, a sum of Rs.10,500 is payable to SGVU towards the thesis presentation and plagiarism check.

The UGC requires the duration to be a minimum of three years. It cannot be completed in lesser time. 

The coursework is mandatory and must be completed with SGVU. The earlier course work does not apply here. 

The papers must be published during your time with SGVU only. Previous publications do not qualify for this.

Yes, you need not appear for the written test, only interview must be attended.
